IRON INFUSIONS

If you don’t have enough iron, your body can’t make hemoglobin. This protein helps blood carry oxygen throughout your body. With this issue, you may develop anemia. This is known as iron-deficiency anemia, the most common type of anemia.

Iron infusion therapy is a medical procedure used to treat iron deficiency anemia. During the procedure, iron is delivered directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous line. This method ensures rapid absorption and can swiftly replenish iron levels in the body. Patients typically experience improved energy levels and overall well-being following treatment.

Follow-Up

Follow up with your primary care provider to monitor your bloodwork and response to treatment.

What to Expect

Before your treatment:

To receive an Iron Infusion at our clinic, you'll need a referral from your primary care provider, along with blood test results within the last 30 days. These requirements help us understand your current iron levels so we can create a customized treatment plan tailored specifically for you.

Before your iron infusion, appropriate bloodwork and criteria will be reviewed to ensure you are a candidate for this treatment.

Procedure:

An intravenous (IV) catheter will be inserted by an experienced registered nurse. The catheter is connected to the IV bag, which contains the iron solution. The iron is delivered slowly during this time to help prevent reactions to a large dose.

An experienced registered nurse will initiate the treatment and you will be monitored whilst the infusion is taking place.

Cost:

A $65 consultation fee applies and includes a medical assessment, review or ordering of bloodwork if needed, and either a referral for an iron infusion or a prescription, as clinically appropriate.

If iron is prescribed and brought to our clinic for administration, a $175 infusion fee applies.

Medication and pharmacy costs are separate and are not included in the infusion fee.

Length of Procedure: The iron infusion can take 30-90 minutes, depending on the medication prescribed.

Treatment Frequency: Depending on the type of iron prescribed, treatment may involve a single infusion or a course of 2–3 infusions. The appropriate formulation and treatment schedule will be determined based on your individual needs.

Side effects:  Although most patient tolerate the treatment without any side effects, some experience nausea, headache, dizziness, flushing, metallic taste, muscle aches, joint pain.

Contraindications: We do not offer iron infusion for pregnant women.
